In my blog series for Rhode Island Inno, I’ve talked a good deal about our thriving capital city, Providence, but there’s another P-town with some serious entrepreneurial chops in our state, and that’s Pawtucket.
With a population of just over 71,000, Pawtucket has the distinction of being the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, as its historic Slater Mill precipitated our country’s pivot from farm to factory in 1793. That’s when Samuel Slater founded the nation’s first water-powered cotton-spinning plant in Pawtucket.
Today, 300 diversified industries operate in Pawtucket. Thanks in part to city officials who have continued making strides to provide businesses with support and financial assistance and to remove red tape, its small business ecosystem serves as the community’s backbone.
